NAVY SEAL INVENTS WORLD’S CHEAPEST EXERCISE EQUIPMENT

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 30 - Fitness industry spending is at a record high. But does money buy fitness? Not according to Phil Black, a former Navy SEAL who recently invented the world’s cheapest full-body workout equipment. It’s called “FitDeck,” and it’s no fancier than a deck of cards.

“There’s this idea in the fitness world that the more expensive the exercise equipment, or the gym membership, the better the workout. That’s absolutely not true,” says Black, who conceptualized FitDeck as a Yale undergraduate, but polished the concept as a Navy SEAL.

“When you’re deployed in jungles, deserts and mountains, there are no Nautilus machines or Lifecycles. We had to rely on body-weight exercises, like push-ups and squat-thrusts. My deck-of-cards concept helped make the workouts interesting and mixed up the routine.”

Black has turned the card-routines he practiced as a Navy SEAL into FitDeck – an ever-changing 50-card exercise regimen, which retails for $18.95 at www.fitdeck.com. Each playing card displays a different exercise – such as lunges or sit-ups – which are intended to be practiced for one minute. Different cards focus on different muscle groups.

Shuffle the deck and you have a completely unique workout. Choose 20 random cards for a 20-minute workout. No equipment is needed for any of the exercises.

Gym memberships have ballooned in recent years. Across the United States, there are now 39.4 million health club members, according to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association. The average member pays $160 for a membership and $55 for monthly dues.

Many people are also investing in expensive home equipment, such as Bowflex machines. “At trade shows, I’ve seen companies selling a football field’s worth of machines to tweak every muscle group, each one costing thousands of dollars,” says Black. “You can get the exact same results by doing crunches, dips, flutter-kicks, and other body-weight exercises. That’s what FitDeck is all about.”
